Pastry Recipes In New England

By Linda Snyder

There are so many interesting and tasty desserts traditionally made in New England. Some are more popular than others, and some recipes come from the old country, Europe, and are kept in as more or less original for all this time. Most pastry recipes in New England are widely known and today they are prepared all around the world. Here are some of these simple, but really tasty treats.

Boston Cream Pie is one of those desserts that will make you forget about your diet, at least for a day. Simple, easy to prepare and delicious. So, for the cake, you need two eggs, separated, one and a half cup sugar, 2 1/4 cups cake flour, three table spoon of baking powder, one table spoon of salt, one third cup of vegetable oil, one cup of milk and one and half table spoon of vanilla.

Separate eggs and mix the egg whites adding one half cup of sugar. Sift dry ingredients together. Combine milk, egg yolks, vanilla and oil, and mix it all together with dry ingredients. Gently combine the mixture with egg whites. Grease and lightly flour your mold, spread the mixture in and bake on 350F until done. Let it cool and remove from the pan.

For making the filling, take 1/3 cup of sugar, one whole egg, 1/4 teaspoon of salt and some vanilla extract or vanilla sugar, three tablespoon flour and one and 1/4 cup milk. Mix all these ingredients together and cook them, stirring all the time, over medium heat. When mixture thickens, remove it from the heat and combine with one table spoon butter. Let it cool covered. Fill the sliced cake and pour cooked chocolate glaze over.

For preparing smooth chocolate glaze you need one and a half ounce of dark chocolate, one and a half cup powdered sugar, three tablespoon of water and one teaspoon of vanilla, as well as two tbs butter. Cook water and sugar, melt chocolate in it and add vanilla. Remove from the stow and mix in the butter. Pour this lovely mixture over your cake and let it cool.

For one really simple to make dessert called Maple apple crisp, you do not have to put in too much effort, and you and your friends will certainly just love the taste. First, you need 4 large apples, peeled and thinly sliced, a juice squeezed of two lemons, some ground cinnamon at your taste and three spoon of maple syrup. Combine pieces of apples, lemon juice, cinnamon and syrup.

For the topping you will need 1 cup uncooked Quaker rolled oats, one third cup flour, half a cup sliced almonds, 2 table spoons vegetable oil, 2 table spoons maple syrup and 1 tea spoon almond extract. Mix topping ingredients all together and let them rest until your apples are baked.

You should preheat your oven first. Put prepared apple mixture in it. Cover everything and bake maybe 40 minutes. The apples should be soft by then. Then, cover them with prepared almond mixture and return everything in the oven, for another 30 minutes or so, or until the topping becomes crispy. This easy dessert combines perfectly with your favorite ice cream, as well as with vanilla ice cream.
