The College Bar And Its Qualities

By Debra Wood

Some towns are put on the map because they are connected to old schools or famous universities. A town like this is called a college town, and they are primarily centers of education that also help out the big school to be found in the town. The people will have services relevant to students or have many facilities that will help them in their pursuit of good education.

Southern schools that are known for their charisma as well as turning out excellent graduates in specific courses are many. One of the most distinguished of these is Virginia Tech or Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, served by the college bar Blacksburg. This has evolved from an old style military school but is still a power in turning out the best engineering graduates.

In the city the campus of this school has a family history that dates back centuries. The Black family patriarch Samuel gave the land area for the current VT campus through the property he gave his son John, while he gave Blacksburg its downtown through land he bequeathed his son William. Both students and residents have benefited from these bequests.

Students can search out for any kind of vibe they like for a place to drink and chill in. Bars are not just places that serve drinks, but where people get to meet or do some other special activity. The activities range from socializing, getting to know people of the other sex, and hanging out with buddies or even frat brothers.

A typical Saturday will have people hopping from bar to bar at very affordable prices. The thing here is to have fun places to mingle and not about being posh or exclusive. Places here feature enough decoration and regalia and other abstruse symbolic stuff so that they can offer something unique to students and patrons.

Some bars are where people go to for things like darts, a great thing to do while drinking. Other games can be found in most places, often dependent on what board games or playing sets people have left behind. There will certainly be cable TV or WiFi, and there are places which have sets permanently tuned to sports channels.

Food, too, is something served in bars, though it is often a sidelight to the drinks. There will be times when drinkers feel the need for eating something, and the eats here are excellent, based on local cuisine and its favorites. Hokies of many kinds and persuasions have all got some line or another for their favorite bar or bars.

There are about a dozen or more of these places serving students in the downtown Blacksburg area. Some cater to varsity sports, especially those beloved by the crowds in Virginia Tech. Some others are the fratty types, with ritual things like covers and a welcoming drink that have strong alcoholic content.

Bars accommodate the student rhythms, whether the need is for a drink, some companionship or usually both, and they know how to take care of rowdy academic hijinks. Most people here know most other folks and Blacksburg is one of those known to be a great place to live in the South.
