Learn How To Build Custom BBQ Pits

A backyard barbeque can be a great DIY project. It can be built below or above ground and as complex or simple as you wish. People who enjoy cooking outdoors love owning custom BBQ pits. The pit can also be used as a smoker and is relatively inexpensive, and takes little time and labor to make. The design can be as complex or simple as you want to make it. Begin the project by developing a plan that considers safety first and quality construction.

Choose the location that will work for your backyard. You want to have a good location that is level and not too distant from the house. You do not want to carry food and grilling utensils very far.

Also, folks want to make sure that the smoke generated by the pit is not invading their home or the neighbors. The most important consideration is fire safety. Make sure that the pit is constructed out of the way of low hanging tree branches, buildings, and wooden fences.

Decide on the kind of pit you want. Choose one that you have space for and that you like. Check the cost of all materials and tools you will need and set aside the time needed to complete the project. You cannot enjoy the pit if it is sitting unfinished. Typically you will use mortar, bricks, a shovel, level, a grill grate, and some type of cover for your pit when your are not using it. You may also want to use sand, paving slabs, bricks, and. Gravel.

Begin by digging a hole for your pit that is no bigger in diameter than the grill covers. You can make the pit as deep as a cinderblock or brick placed vertically. The best shapes for a pit are a square or rectangle. Bricks or cinderblocks are used to secure the sides when placed around the interior edge. Mortar is used to hold bricks in place preventing them from falling inside the pit.

It is important to make certain the grill lays flat on top of the hole. Gravel and paving slabs placed around the pit on the grass forms defensible area. If you choose not to use gravel or slabs you should clear away grass surrounding the pit. Now you are ready to enjoy barbequing with your new pit.
